Everyday in May: {Day 29: The Sabbath}

I didn't always understand what the Sabbath was. When I was a kid, I associated it with Sunday, the day you go to church. It was a day my dad was off from work. That was it.

As I've grown in my faith and drawn closer to God, I walk with Him. He knows me, He sees me. He works on my heart. I'm not the same person I was. I'm no longer a slave to fear; I am a child of God!

This book changed the idea of Sabbath for me.

Buchanan states the basic golden rule for Sabbath: "Stop doing what you ought to do. Shuck the have-to and lay hold of the get-to. Embrace that which gives life."
Essentially, if you feel like Sabbath means you HAVE to go to church, don't. If you can say, I GET to go to church, you're honoring the Sabbath. If you GET to spend time with family, do it. If you GET to go to Disneyland, or you GET to spend time on the family budget, or you GET to pull weeds in your yard, you've mastered it. (If you GET to nap, that's awesome!)

G: "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy." Exodus 20:8
L: It's about changing our mindset, a pointed effort to identify your blessings and experience God's kingdom for His glory. This idea has made me turn Sunday on its head. We work hard 6 days out of the week so we can rest on Sunday. God did it, and we take our cues from Him. We keep the Sabbath holy by the get-to, not the have-to.
A: Keep constant focus on God. Take rest in God's unconditional love. God carries us each day.
M: Lord I am grateful for rest. You've equipped me to work hard, serve You in ministry, love others, and trust You in all things. Help me to keep the Sabbath holy by following your lead and resting, by enjoying your provision, by fellowship, by example.
